Why Schools Are Replacing Worn-Out Voice Reinforcement with Infrared Soundfield Systems

Across Europe and North America, many classroom audio installations date from the first wave of AV upgrades more than a decade ago. Amplifiers are failing, ceiling speakers are discoloured, and replacement parts are no longer available. When a school finally refreshes those rooms, the brief has usually changed.
Intelligibility over loudness
The first priority is no longer “make the teacher louder”. Facility teams and SENCOs increasingly ask for consistent speech intelligibility across the whole room, including the back row and students with mild hearing loss. That puts speaker placement, low distortion and even coverage ahead of raw amplifier power on the specification.
Teacher voice care
Voice strain is a recognised occupational issue for teachers. A soundfield system that lets a teacher speak at a natural level — rather than projecting over classroom noise — is now part of staff wellbeing planning in many schools. Pendant microphones are usually preferred because they keep both hands free and maintain a consistent distance from the mouth.
Hybrid teaching is now standard
Rooms that were never designed for recording now host video calls, lecture capture and remote students. A modern classroom audio system needs a clean digital feed to the room PC, not just a speaker output. USB audio interfaces and line outputs have moved from “nice to have” to the core specification.
Simpler maintenance and charging
Schools are choosing systems with charging docks that hold every microphone in one place, clear battery indicators and standard power supplies. Reducing the number of daily tasks for teachers matters as much as the audio performance itself.
Planning the refresh
A typical refresh starts with one or two pilot rooms, chosen to represent the most common classroom type. Once teachers have used the system for a term, the design is adjusted and rolled out in phases. This avoids specifying 40 rooms from a single demonstration and discovering too late that the science labs or the double-height hall need a different approach.
Seekika Audio works with schools, distributors and AV integrators on classroom audio refreshes. We can supply sample units and configuration guidance for pilot rooms, then scale the same design across a campus.
