Music Department Vocal and Ensemble Rooms

A conservatory’s teaching rooms needed clean vocal reinforcement for ensemble coaching without colouring the sound — a compact infrared microphone system and monitor speakers replaced domestic hi-fi equipment.
The Challenge
- Tutors were using domestic hi-fi speakers that distorted at the levels needed for ensemble coaching.
- Tutors needed to move around the room while demonstrating, so a fixed wired microphone was not practical.
- Rooms were also used for recording, so any reinforcement had to be switchable out of the signal path.
The Solution
- IR-380 infrared microphones were supplied for vocal demonstration, with the receiver’s line output feeding the teaching-room system.
- SP-26 speakers were mounted on stands at ear height rather than wall-mounted, to keep the sound image natural.
- A bypass switch was fitted so the reinforcement path can be removed entirely for recording sessions.
The Result
8teaching rooms
2speakers per room
1switch to bypass reinforcement
Tutors can move freely while demonstrating dynamics and pitch without the colouration of the previous domestic hi-fi setup, and the same rooms can be used for recording without re-patching.
